While more and more students report enjoying math-based classes as opposed to reading-based ones, social media is still atwitter with jokes about not understand math, not wanting to do math, and (on the extreme end) loathing math. It’s not easy to change teens’ minds, as even the casual observer knows, but there are certainly ways that teachers can make the subject just a bit more enticing. Here are a handful of ways to get students excited about math.
Personalize the Curriculum
This can be difficult to do depending on how stringent your school district is in regards to required curricula, but educators have the power to make positive changes in the classroom. As you teach a specific group of students, take stock of their characteristics. Do they frantically scribble notes? Are they drowsy since they just came back from lunch? Are they disheartened that they’re in a remedial math course? Understand your students before sticking to a firm lesson plan. For instance, if you’ve got note-takers in the room, go slow enough so that they have time to write, and pare down slides to make their job easier. If students are drowsy or disheartened, maintain an upbeat and encouraging demeanor.
